Ebook About
Award Winner in the Science category of the 2020 Best Book Awards sponsored by American Book FestAward-winning author and thought leader Dawson Church, Ph.D., blends cutting-edge neuroscience with intense firsthand experience to show you how you can rewire your brain for happiness-starting right now.Neural plasticity-the discovery that the brain is capable of rewiring itself-is now widely understood. But what few people have grasped yet is how quickly this is happening, how extensive brain changes can be, and how much control each of us has over the process. In Bliss Brain, famed researcher Dawson Church digs deep into leading-edge science, and finds stunning evidence of rapid and radical brain change. In just eight weeks of practice, 12 minutes a day, using the right techniques, we can produce measurable changes in our brains. These make us calmer, happier, and more resilient. When we cultivate these pleasurable states over time, they become traits. We don't just feel more blissful as a temporary state; the changes are literally hard-wired into our brains, becoming stable and enduring personality traits. The startling conclusions of Church's research show that neural remodeling goes much farther than scientists have previously understood, with stress circuits shriveling over time. Simultaneously, "The Enlightenment Circuit"-associated with happiness, compassion, productivity, creativity, and resilience-expands.During deep meditation, Church shows how "the 7 neurochemicals of ecstasy" are released in our brains. These include anandamide, a neurotransmitter that's been named "the bliss molecule" because it mimics the effects of THC, the active ingredient in cannabis. It boosts serotonin and dopamine; the first is an analog of psilocybin, the second of cocaine. He shows how cultivating these elevated emotional states literally produces a self-induced high. While writing Bliss Brain, Church went through a series of disasters, including escaping seconds ahead of a California wildfire that consumed his home and office and claimed 22 lives. The fire triggered a painful medical condition and a financial disaster. Through it all, Church steadily practiced the techniques of Bliss Brain while teaching them to thousands of other people. This book weaves his story of resilience into the fabric of neuroscience, producing a fascinating picture of just how happy we can make our brains, no matter what the odds.

Book Bliss Brain: The Neuroscience of Remodeling Your Brain for Resilience, Creativity, and Joy Review :

Developing a meditation practice has been one of the joys and challenges of my life. I’ve read for years how beneficial it is, and after reading in Tools of Titans by Tim Ferriss that the majority of successful people meditate, I gave it a try.I meditated ten minutes a day for about nine months, with very few missed days. I had read how difficult it was, and that it was very much a skill to learn, so I was prepared for it to take time to really see any benefit. After nine months, though, I really didn’t feel I’d made any progress, and I quit. What I’ve learned since then is that, number one, ten minutes a day really isn’t enough when you’re learning, especially if you’re using conventional meditation techniques. Number two, it can take years to feel like you are significantly successful. I didn’t accept at the time that the 10 seconds or so I would actually get into the groove was about all I could expect at that point. The key is to keep doing it and keep building the “muscle” of meditation. The practice is the practice, as the saying goes.Luckily, I found a shortcut to a higher “success rate” -Bliss Brain by Dawson Church. He and his team studied high-level meditators and studies about meditation, and developed a technique called Ecomeditation. With it, I have been able to enter a fully immersed meditative state almost every day, after only one week of trying! The book gives a lot of information regarding meditation and the neuroscience behind it, as well as how Dawson uses Ecomeditation. He gives weekly exercises at the end of each chapter, along with bonus resources you can access on the book’s webpage. It’s been a fascinating read, but it’s the bonus materials that have really made the difference for me: Dawson gives a guided meditation to go with each chapter. Those meditations are what has allowed me to progress so quickly. They are under twenty minutes long (most are 15-16 minutes) and easy to download and use. He offers with and without background music for each one - I prefer the ones with music. Full disclosure: it took me a few days to adjust to Dawson’s voice. He has a very unique tone and cadence, and his word pronunciation is occasionally distracting for me. Now that I’m used to it, though, I find it very soothing. After more than a month of practice, the effects are profound. I find myself to be calmer. I am better able to step back and view others’ actions through a compassionate lens before I react, instead of after. I’m able to focus better, and I feel more in control of my emotional state. I’m also seeing an increase in my creativity. My favorite part of the meditation itself is that, when I open my eyes at the end, I find myself smiling reflexively. Starting the day with a deep feeling of joy and gratitude is amazing. This book (and its meditations) have been an immeasurable gift. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone looking for greater focus, clarity, and peace in their lives.
Fragmented and silly. I’m supposed to be happy for a guy who let his cats burn in a fire?
